What to Know about 7 Historical Landmarks

There’s no shortage of historical sites in Nassau that showcase this region’s past. A great way to learn about these landmarks is on a guided tour, but you can also set off on your own to see what you can find.

1. Fort Charlotte is found just off West Bay Street. Built in 1788, it was named after Queen Saharia Charlotte, the wife of King George III. Stop by on Wednesdays or Thursdays around 11:30 a.m. to witness a living historical scene. 
2. Another popular fort to visit is Fort Fincastle. Constructed of cut limestone around 1793, the structure’s location on Bennet’s Hill helped it protect Nassau and its harbor. Guided tours are offered daily from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. 
3. The best way to explore Clifton Heritage Memorial Park is on a heritage tour. Your knowledgeable guide will show you around the park’s ruins and tell you about plantation life. The tour takes roughly 45 minutes to an hour.
4. One of Nassau’s most popular historical landmarks is the Queen’s Staircase, named in honor of Queen Victoria. Roughly 600 enslaved people carved the 600 steps between 1793 and 1794. 
5. Fort Montagu is the oldest fort still standing on New Providence Island. Built of local limestone in 1741, this structure at Nassau Harbour’s eastern end was tasked with warding off Spanish invaders.
6. The Hog Island Lighthouse goes by several names, including Nassau Harbour Lighthouse. Perched on the western tip of Paradise Island, it was constructed in 1817 and is considered the oldest surviving lighthouse in the West Indies. 
7. Make your way to the back of the Supreme Court building to find the Garden of Remembrance. The Cenotaph here is a memorial to Bahamians who lost their lives in World Wars I and II. It also honors the four Royal Bahamas Defence Force marines who lost their lives during the HMBS Flamingo attack.
